67 Sunup, Cades Cove, Tennessee

Feeling a bit like Ansel rushing to get his 8 x 10 view camera set up atop the platform on his woody Cadillac stationwagon during that tour de force moment in photographic history when he took “Moonrise over Hernandez, New Mexico,” I hurried to get my 6 x 7 Pentax and tripod out of my VW van. Running back to the right spot in the field, I set up and took this delicate composition that was about to be destroyed by the same sunrise that was making it so beautiful.

Just as in Ansel’s case, thirty seconds after I made my exposure, the sunlight changed and the magic was gone.
